Question about Gatorbait

I asked for a UA buff tonight and Gatorbait didn't buff my shield but he buffed my weapon. Are there spells missing and is it possible to get Gator to buff shields? I'm not sure about other melees using shields but I was surprised by this.

Tell him allbane
then open a trade window with him, but the shield and any armor you want baned, dont' press trade.
Then tell him buff.
